After reading the information from Module 7 I found this video that explains the use of Concept Mapping. The first video explaines how the process works and the second link is a testimonial from experts that have used this technique in their class. Students can use this as a tool to show a connection to the new information presented. Teachers can use the tool as a guide to see students misconceptions of how a particular concept connects to their prior knowledge. This will allow teachers to guide students on how to integrate the new information correctly.

Thanks for posting the great videos on concept mapping. I agree that concept mapping allows one to visualize the relationships between items and reinforce mental associations to increase understanding and remembering. I think teachers could also increase student ability in the area of creative thinking through the use of concept maps. Creative thinking consists of four areas: fluency of thought, flexibility of thought, originality and elaboration. If a child created a concept map around the word "ball" for instance, one branch might be sports and then all of the types of balls used for sports listed underneath. Another branch might be "sayings" and list phrases like "on the ball" or "have a ball" and so on. The number of items listed in the entire map would relate to fluency and the number of categories would relate to flexibility. If you compared the maps, students who listed items or thoughts others did not would related to originality.
